Ectopic pregnancy: why early ultrasound is critical

Finding out you are pregnant can come with surprise, uncertainty, fear, or joy. None of those feelings can tell you where the pregnancy is.

Most pregnancies implant in the uterus. An ectopic pregnancy implants outside it — often in a fallopian tube. It cannot be carried to term, and it can become a medical emergency if it ruptures.

Why ultrasound belongs early

A home test cannot locate a pregnancy. A limited obstetric ultrasound, in the right window, can help show whether a pregnancy appears in the uterus, whether it appears viable, and an estimate of gestational age. Those facts change everything that follows.

Eden provides limited OB ultrasound as part of pregnancy confirmation. It is not a substitute for an emergency department if you are in danger, and it is not ongoing prenatal care.

Go to an emergency department now if you have

One-sided pelvic or shoulder pain, heavy bleeding, dizziness, fainting, or a feeling that something is very wrong — especially if you already know you are pregnant or you have a history of ectopic pregnancy, tubal surgery, or IUD use. Call 911 if you cannot get there safely.

Do not wait for a weekday clinic appointment to evaluate those symptoms.
