How to support a friend who tells you she’s pregnant

Believe her, match her volume, ask whether she wants listening or a next step. What helps, and what turns a confidence into gossip.

When a friend tells you she is pregnant, it is often a vulnerable moment. Even if the news sounds joyful, she may be scared. Even if she is scared, she may not want you to take the story and run.

What usually helps

  • Believe her. Do not start with “are you sure?” unless she is asking you to help her get a test.
  • Match her volume. If she is whispering, do not announce it to the group chat.
  • Ask one useful question: “Do you want me to listen, or do you want help with a next step?”
  • Offer something concrete: a ride, sitting in a waiting room, watching a younger child, bringing food. Vague “let me know if you need anything” is easy to say and hard to use.
  • Do not recruit her into your opinion. She can feel two things at once. You do not have to pick for her.

If she wants medical facts — is this a pregnancy, is it located in the uterus, how far along — she can come to Eden. You can offer to come if she invites you. You cannot make the appointment in her name.

What does not help

Advice she did not ask for. Gossip. Comparing her to someone else. Treating abortion, parenting, or adoption as small talk. Pressuring her to tell a parent, a partner, or a pastor on your timeline.

If you are the friend who needs a starting point of your own, request an appointment. If you are supporting her, you can still send her the link and then be quiet enough for her to use it.
