Talking with him when you’re pregnant

How to start the conversation, what you might hear, and why you do not have to do any of this as a pair if that is not safe or possible.

Some conversations will not wait for the perfect wording. Pregnancy is one of them. You still get to choose the room, the timing, and how much you say on the first pass.

Before you start

You do not owe anyone the news before you have confirmed it, or before you feel steady enough to hear a response. If you are unsafe in the relationship, skip the big talk until you have a plan for your own protection. Local advocates and our staff can help you think that through privately.

If you are going to tell him, a few practical notes:

  • Pick a time when neither of you is walking out the door.
  • Lead with the fact, then the feeling. “I took a test. It is positive. I am scared / unsure / glad / all of it.”
  • You are allowed to say you do not know what you want yet.
  • You are allowed to ask him to listen before he solves.

What you might hear

He may rise to it. He may go quiet. He may make it about himself for a minute. None of that settles the medical facts, and none of it has to be the last word. Give the first reaction a little air — then come back to what you need: a ride, a second appointment, a week without pressure, a honest answer about whether he will stay in the room.

If the conversation turns cruel or controlling, you can leave it. A pregnancy does not require you to absorb someone else’s anger in order to be taken seriously.

You do not have to do this as a pair

He is welcome here. So are you, alone. We offer a calm place to confirm a pregnancy, see a limited ultrasound, and talk through options information without an audience.
