“Femtech” is a word Ida Tin, who founded the cycle-tracking app Clue, used in 2016 for technology aimed at women’s health — period tracking, fertility windows, pregnancy logs, pelvic-health tools, and more.
Apps can be useful. They can also be wrong, sold, or mistaken for a clinic.
What a tracker cannot do
A phone cannot confirm a pregnancy the way a clinic test can. It cannot tell you whether a pregnancy is in the uterus. It cannot date a pregnancy the way ultrasound can. It cannot treat an STI. It cannot replace a Pap or an HPV test ordered by a clinician who will follow up on the result.
If an app says you are pregnant, or late, or “low risk,” treat that as a prompt to get actual care — not as the care.
Privacy is part of health
Cycle and pregnancy data is intimate. Read what an app stores, whether it sells data, and whether you can delete it. You do not owe a company a daily log in order to deserve a confidential visit.
