The Eden Clinic

Pregnancy Information for Men

Pregnancy can be both exciting and scary all at the same time. If you think she’s pregnant, confirming the pregnancy is the first step. Eden Clinic provides confidential and free pregnancy testing, and we’re here to help you both make an informed decision and help you show your support.

How can you help her? Truly listen to what she is saying and try to understand her feelings. Remember, she is probably scared or confused.

We know you have concerns and questions that you would like to discuss. Accompany your partner to her pregnancy confirmation appointment and you’ll have an opportunity to ask our medical staff questions following the pregnancy test.

Eden offers classes on pregnancy health, parenting and life skills, and other topics. You’ll also have access to our Patient Advocate Coordinator who can provide you with referrals to helpful community organizations.

You should be able to express your opinion, but you should never force her into a decision. She needs to know you care and that you are ready to walk through this journey with her. Your support and reassurance are important, but the decision is ultimately hers to make.

Stay Calm

An unexpected pregnancy can create an emotional crisis and you might feel as though you need to act quickly. Most likely, you have time to gather facts, talk to friends and family you trust for support, and think through your decisions. Decisions made quickly and without considering all options, are usually the ones we most regret.

Come with her to the appointment. Eden Clinic staff will walk with you through the decision-making process and then support you through the pregnancy.

Slow Down and Listen

Acting quickly is sometimes the instinct in an unexpected pregnancy but try to slow down and take things one step at a time. Listen to her concerns and her feelings without being judgmental. One of the worst things you can do is be pushy or overbearing.

Express Yourself Honestly

But make sure she knows she is not alone.  There will be many emotions for both of you with an unexpected pregnancy. It’s normal to have feelings of anger, frustration, and fear. You’re going through this together, so communication is important.

Gather All the Facts

Get accurate information on each of your options so you can make the best decision for both of you. Eden offers appointments with trained specialists who can meet with you, listen to your concerns, and provide answers to your questions. Talk with trusted family and friends for support.

Be Available and Supportive

An unexpected pregnancy may feel like a major roadblock for both of you. Pressuring her will only push her away. Work together as a team.

What You Should Not Do

Don’t bail – The more you run from this, the harder it becomes to think and act clearly.

Don’t pressure her – Applying pressure will only push her away, possibly into a regretful situation. You will do well to work together as a team.

Don’t forget – You have a very active role in this situation. Listen to input as well as sharing your thoughts.

Don’t ignore your own concerns and desires – Don’t tell her you’ll support her decision without being honest about your own feelings. She can feel abandoned and left to make the decision alone if you fail to be honest about your own concerns and desires.
